Week 7: Difficult Transcriptions

This week I was faced with the most difficult letter yet. The letter I transcribed was sent from James Harrison to Roger Longworth via Susannah Milner. It caught me by surprise due to how close the lines were and type of handwriting. Here is what the letter looked like:

As you can infer, it took me a while to get through the letter. I sent in my transcript to Adaeze, who is in charge of transcriptions, and fill it out to the best of my ability. I am hoping that her feedback will clarify some sentences/words that I had difficulty on and so I can improve on the next letter I transcribe from James Harrison.

This week I also did another research quality assurance assignment for the team on mentions. The researchers had a better time identifying mentions and almost all of them were in agreement for their annotations. Here is a look at what this week's assessment letter looked like:

Next week I will be beginning group mentions assessments as it was suggested by researchers a couple weeks ago. A letter will be presented on the whiteboard for researchers to work together in identifying mentions. Their responses will be documented in a Microsoft Form for each mention they identify. It will be exciting to see how well everyone works together and if any agreements/disagreements arise while completing the task. Any questions that arise will also be valuable to my research on quality assurance for the PRINT project.

Week 11: Internship Showcase

There are only two weeks left for my internship and this week I got to share my experiences with my peers in the Internship Showcase. Instead of individual presentations I got to present with my fellow PRINT team members, Bree and Maggie. We worked together leading up to the presentation to create our presentation and outline.  Bree's focus this summer was working on letters within a repository while Maggie worked on network mapping. I shared my work with quality assurance using Inter Annotator Agreement. We each had different roles but our presentation came together great.  Each role showcased the different ways researchers are utilized for the PRINT project. It also did a great job showcasing the project for students who had no idea what PRINT was as well as potential students who were interested in joining the project.  Here is the link to the rest of our presentation: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/10VVF192NSuTNGhey2Lod1FUozXuZrS5Ef1kxClTy-HI/edit?usp=sha...

Week 2: Transcription Practice & Protocols

In my second week of my internship at PRINT I started to become familiarized with my role. Each week I participate in Tuesday team meetings and transcription Friday. After Tuesday's meeting I had a one-on-one with Dr. Beiler and we discussed the syllabus and the type of the work I will be engaging in throughout the summer. Dr. Belier and Dr. Miller asked if I would like to work on quality assurance in the databases which I happily agreed. For this task I will need to read secondary literature on a concept called i nter annotator agreement. Essentially I will be examining the metadata throughout PRINT's database beginning with the Pemberton papers and make sure annotators are being consistent. In order to do so I will need to familiarize myself with PRINT protocols for metadata as well as EndNote which I began this week. EndNote is PRINT's database for their papers. In addition to my work on metadata, I am practicing how to transcribe letters in STARS database. This week I t...

Week 10: More Assessment Results & Great News!

This week I continued the group mentions assessment with the researchers in PRINT. Thanks to Casey, this assessment had 8 mentions which meant the researchers were tasked with a somewhat difficult letter. Here is an example of the letter below: 16158 - George Shaw, Bickerstaffe, Lancashire, England to Phineas Pemberton, Pennsylvania, June 16, 1684  "...Dear PP I rcd [received] thy dated ye 27h of the 9h mo: 83 in which I was glad to hear of your wellfare: freinds are generaly well hear a way the last assizes the judge gave in charge they must put the laws in exemption aganst desenters: Justices [Entwistle?/Entwhistle?] & [Haith?] sent warrants to seeke for conventikles meetings ye offecers are prity sivell [civil] att the present: ouer dere [our dear] friend James Fletcher went for Irland [Ireland] this last winter and I recd [received] a letter from him yesterday and he sayeth Wm Edmondson [William Edmondson] is gone ^to^ the West [Ingagues?] [West Antigues/Antigua?] before h...
